[WORKSHOP] The Art Of The Story: Visual Storytelling: A Collaborative, Interactive Workshop

Visual Storytelling is the art of using language and images to convey a narrative account of real or imagined events. Historically, humans have used this sharing of experience to pass on knowledge, beliefs, values, secrets and information. Through stories we explain how things are, why they are, and our role and purpose. Stories are the building blocks of knowledge and the foundation of memory and learning. Stories connect us with our humanness and link past, present, and future by sharing all of the possible consequences and outcomes of our behavior and actions.

Visual Storytelling combines the narrative text of a story with creative elements to augment and enhance the traditional storytelling process. By design, it is a co-creative process resulting in an intimate, interpretive expressive technique. Visual Storytelling passes on the essence of who we are and utilizes both language and art. Stories are a prime vehicle for assessing and interpreting events, experiences, and concepts from minor moments of daily life to the grand nature of the human condition. It is an intrinsic and basic form of human communication. Our ancestors as far back as the cave man have been using visual stories to document and record experiences. Today, the visualization of our personal stories is an integral and essential part of the human experience.

Effective visual storytelling is a remarkable art form. In this workshop, artist and writer Debbie Millman will work with a group of students interested in exploring the art of telling a story through a unique combination of images and words. In this workshop, we will investigate the ability stories have to honor the diversity and commonality of our collective human experience.

In this workshop, we will do the following:

  1. Work to define and refine the basic narrative structure of a story
  2. Plot the visual arc of a story
  3. Create the visual language of the story

The workshop will result in the creation of a visual story for each participant.

Requirements of participants:

Each participant of this workshop should come to the workshop with a first draft of a short story or essay or poem. In addition, the participants should come with creative tools they would like to use to visually express their story, i.e., paint, canvases, boards, colored pencils, crayons, chalk, chalkboard, yarn, thread, fabric, paper, journals, photographs, etc. For examples, please look at “Look Both Ways: Illustrated Essays on the Intersection of Life and Design,” by Debbie Millman.

[WORKSHOP] Intro To Envision - Step One Of The Path To Impact

Path to Impact: Is a strategic design methodology that combines the impact focus of design for good with the rigor of design strategy, sustainable design, systems thinking, and the theory of change to help designers envision, plan, design, measure, and share their impact.

Combining the ethics of socially responsible design with a sustainable design process the Path To Impact™ leads designers through the creation process from crafting initial assumptions to a case study reporting a project’s impact respecting the following four pillars impacting integral aspects of humanity: environment, society, culture, and economy.

Executing The Inevitable Redesign

Every designer dreams of tackling a large-scale redesign, right? It’s thrilling to craft a new brand identity, or rethink a digital experience from the ground up. On the flip side, redesigns can also feel daunting, with the risk of alienating loyal users by making sweeping changes. The excitement of making changes can also lead to an ever-expanding list of features, and missed deadlines due to scope creep.

Through case studies of redesigns at VICE and Rent the Runway, Jess will share a framework for strategizing and executing on digital product redesigns, from a creative’s point of view. By looking at the motivation for a redesign—from technology, to user experience, to branding—she'll outline critical questions that can help guide redesign projects smoothly from start to finish.

In this talk, you’ll hear about how you as a designer can contribute to a digital redesign—from effectively advocating for a brand and identity, to understanding ways to ensure consistency on a code level, to aligning new feature ideas with product intentions.

After this talk, you’ll take away:

  1. How to assess the motivations behind a redesign
  2. Critical questions to frame design exploration
  3. Strategies to keep a redesign project on track

A Day In The Life Of An In-House Designer

An in-house designer’s work is never done. There’s always a new A/B test to run, a landing page to create, a stakeholder to communicate with or a colleague who needs design help. You have to get really good at not only managing the design process, but at being the voice for design within your company. That can mean asking the right questions to pull the brief out, sharing prototypes with a stakeholder and guiding them on how to give useful feedback, or being the protector of the brand.

In this session you’ll hear from in-house marketing designer Charli Marie about what a typical day of work looks like for her at the email marketing software company ConvertKit. You’ll get insight into not only her design process but how she advocates for design within her team. You’ll hear about the challenges she faces in her role as the only marketing designer in the company and how she’s made herself invaluable to her team.

If you’re a designer on a small team or the only designer in your company, this session is going to help you do your job better and increase your worth. You’ll learn:

  1. How you can bring a lot of value to your company by advocating for design and presenting yourself as the resident design expert.
  2. The right questions to ask to pull the brief from someone and make sure you fully understand the problem you’re solving.
  3.  How to educate your team on the design process and encourage them to give useful feedback so that you’re all doing your best work.

Designing Emotionally Intelligent Machines

As technology becomes deeply integrated into every aspect of our lives, people have begun to expect more emotionally intelligent interactions. But smartphones don’t know if we’re having a good day or a bad day, connected homes can't really communicate with empathy, and cars couldn’t care less about compassion. Technology is developing more IQ, but it still lacks EQ.
Artificial intelligence is starting to tune in to emotional signals, but in a limited way. Current design practices account for just a few emotions. In the near future, designers, developers, and entrepreneurs will be called on to develop technology with greater emotional intelligence. Join Pamela in exploring the new world of emotion AI and its implication for our work.
You'll learn:
• How the latest emotion tech will change how we design
• How to blend principles of emotional intelligence with design thinking
• Why we should be modeling relationships over experiences

Build Your Brand With LinkedIn

Does LinkedIn really matter for creative pros? YES!

• LinkedIn has more than 500M members worldwide
• 2 new members join every second
• Nearly every industry uses LinkedIn to find and vet job candidates
• More than 90% of recruiters rely on the site

If you don’t have an up to date and complete LinkedIn profile, you’re potentially missing out on opportunities. The people that are hiring are on LinkedIn, and you need to put your best foot forward there as well.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how use several products within the LinkedIn ecosystem to build brands and find work. It all begins with a great personal profile or company page designed to show up in searches done by the people you want to connect with, and it needs to showcase you, your work, what you care about, and all you have to offer. Personal profiles are so much more than a static resume online, especially for creative professionals that require a way to present their latest visual work in an organized and thoughtful way.

Once your profile is strong and up to date, the next step is using LinkedIn to become a thought leader. By writing articles on the LinkedIn platform, participating in LinkedIn groups, and sharing content that your communities seek, you’ll be seen as someone with their finger on the pulse, and a go-to person. Get essential tips on how to write articles that will get traction and resonate with your audience.

Lastly, learn how to drive your freelance business with ProFinder, a matchmaking service between freelancers and clients. A large proportion of requests for proposals in its business categories are for marketing, branding, and design, many of which come from small business owners.

There’s a lot to cover and during the workshop, but you’ll have time to fine tune your online presence and get feedback so you won’t miss any opportunities!

The Branded Narrative

Creating a beautiful brand identity is only the first step to create a successful outcome. The sequence and narrative through each point of contact is as critical as the visuals. For years, marketers worked with a “spray and pray” approach; make a bunch of stuff and send it to everyone. But, today, a more surgical and economically efficient approach is needed. Sean Adams will explain the process to determine what to communicate to whom when, and have sign-in from the client.

Designs That Speak The Customer's Lingo

Speaking a shared lingo creates a level of communication so connected that it paradoxically seems unspoken. This is what excellent design does as well. Learn how to design using the concept of Lingo to create designs that people can feel beyond what they can express with words. It’s this emotional connection to your design work that is necessary to stand out, compel your audience and establish resonance. Look, Listen, Create, Repeat × Forever

Presence, observation, and listening are some of the most powerful tools at our disposal as designers. They’re skills that enable us to uncover the questions to ask and which lead to unexpected connections and novel or interesting approaches to solving problems. But deadlines, overwork, and our own ability to be fully present leave us feeling as though the world and the place of technology in it is increasingly working against us.

Using personal anecdotes, observations, and projects from the Analog Research Lab at Facebook as a backdrop, this talk will touch on reclaiming an ability to be open and alert to the influence of stillness and listening on your creative energies, provide clues for how to tap into the zeitgeist to meaningfully influence priorities and accepted norms and behaviors, and how these skills can lead to stronger, more empathetic, and collaborative organizations.

What Do We Want Design To Be?

Design success stories are everywhere, but the design profession remains largely in a state of arrested development—neither as well understood nor as well valued as our peers in technology. If we are committed to fulfilling design’s potential, we need to examine closely our ambitions, and our motivations. In this talk, Adobe Senior Principal Designer Khoi Vinh, writer at Subtraction.com, former design director for NYTimes.com, and named one of Fast Company’s “Fifty Most Influential Designers,” takes a sober look at what’s holding design back and where it can go next.

This Might Get Me Fired

Why innovation is rarely authorized Every company says they want more innovation and leaders who are able to deliver it yet they are often more afraid of extinction than the change that’s necessary for that innovation to be created. As a result, innovation often happens when teams go against the rules and even risk their jobs to get it done. This panel discussion made up of some of the world’s leading voices on creativity and innovation will look at why this is the case and share stories of success and failure from working with SYPartners, Diesel, Starwood Hotels, Citi, Google, PWC and more.

Punks And Pinstripes The Secret Society Of Exponential Intrapreneurship

Inside of every huge company rests a dormant volcano of intrapreneurs waiting to be activated, waiting to disrupt the status quo, waiting to create an innovation inflection point.

But they often suppress their innovation superpowers for fear of being ostracized. They keep their heads down, follow the formula, and try not make too many waves.

Greg Larkin, serial intrapreneur and best-selling author of This Might Get Me Fired, brings us into the room where bold intrapreneurs refuse to slow down and defer their dreams. He shares stories from Google, PwC, and Bloomberg where a new generation of leaders find their voice, build community, and create a “new normal” for their company, their market and themselves.

You’ll learn how to:

• Build an innovation coalition - The entrepreneur underground consists of  people who don’t seem to belong together. In a large corporation this usually is a powerful executive in total solidarity with someone who refuses to hide their neck tattoo.
• Enlist The Godfather. The Godfather is the one executive who’s more afraid of extinction than change. They are the powerful leaders within an organization who are determined to leave a legacy of innovation and modernization.

• Announce The Arrival of A New Era . Word of an innovation coalition travels fast in a huge company. Great intrapreneur teams announce their arrival with a bang.

Embracing this change and flexing the ability to adapt is key business survival and futureproofing for both designer and client. We'll review specific examples of brands at three inflection points: growth (startups on the rise), shifting (companies adapting to keep up with changing market demands) and evolvement (storied brands that need to modernize to stay current and top of mind) and provide strategies, work methodologies and branding exercises for each stage.
