Presence, observation, and listening are some of the most powerful tools at our disposal as designers. They’re skills that enable us to uncover the questions to ask and which lead to unexpected connections and novel or interesting approaches to solving problems. But deadlines, overwork, and our own ability to be fully present leave us feeling as though the world and the place of technology in it is increasingly working against us.
Using personal anecdotes, observations, and projects from the Analog Research Lab at Facebook as a backdrop, this talk will touch on reclaiming an ability to be open and alert to the influence of stillness and listening on your creative energies, provide clues for how to tap into the zeitgeist to meaningfully influence priorities and accepted norms and behaviors, and how these skills can lead to stronger, more empathetic, and collaborative organizations.
